A Short History Of The Penrith Panthers

The Penrith Panthers joined the NSWRL competition in 1967, and they were known as the 'Panthers' as early as 1970. They struggled for nearly 20 years before they were able to reach their first final series. When they finally made the finals in 1990, they were beaten by the Canberra Raiders. The following year, they again played off against the Raiders, but this time they left the field victorious. The last time they made the grand final and won, was 2003 when they beat the Sydney Roosters.

The original Panthers jersey was brown with a white 'V', which earned them the nickname of the 'Chocolate Soldiers'. In 1974, they changed to brown and white vertical bars, and in 1991 they changed the colours to black, white, red, yellow and green stripes. This once again gave them a sweet nickname – the 'Liquorice Allsorts'. In 2000, they chose more mature colours - black, rust red, teal green, and white, before changing it to a new design in 2004. Then, in 2016, the club asked fans what design they wanted, and the majority voted for the design worn in their first premiership - yep, the Liquorice Allsorts one. While there have been a few more tweaks to the design over the years, this is the colour scheme they currently run with.
