Nicknamed the Power, Port Adelaide was a founding member of the South Australian Football Association (SAFA) and has continued to be a dominant force within South Australian football. If you’re a Port fan, make sure you get your official licensed Port Power merch right here at The Stubby Club.
Born in 1870, Port Adelaide Football Club is the oldest professional football club in South Australia and the fifth oldest in the AFL. Port joined in AFL in 1997 and claimed three minor premierships and a premiership under coach Mark Williams between 2002 and 2004. The club has an intense rivalry with fellow South Australian AFL team, the Adelaide Crows. When they joined the AFL, Port Adelaide was forced to change their guernsey from black and white to teal and silver, to differentiate the club from Collingwood. In their first Grand Final appearance in 2004, Port Adelaide faced the Brisbane Lions who were attempting to win a record-equalling fourth straight flag. Port went on to win by 40 points to claim their first AFL premiership.
Rock Your Port Power Merch With Pride
The black and white ‘prison bar’ guernsey has been Port Adelaide’s most iconic guernsey design, first adopting it in 1902. Did you know? The design was a literal depiction of the wharves and pylons prominent along the docks of Port Adelaide. While the ‘prison bar’ nickname was originally used in a derogatory fashion, Port Adelaide fans have gone on to relish the nickname. Despite being forced to change the design when they joined the AFL, the club still wears their ‘prison bar’ guernsey in select games.
