A Short History Of The Adelaide Crows

Nicknamed the Crows, the Adelaide Football Club was founded in 1990 as the de facto team representing South Australia in the AFL. The team finished ninth in their first season in the AFL in 1991, making them the highest-ranking expansion club in a debut year. The men’s team won two premierships back-to-back in 1997 and 1998. In both grand final matches, the Crows went in as underdogs. Over their 29-year history, the Crows have appeared in 15 finals series. The Adelaide Crows women’s team has also won two premierships and is considered the most successful team in the AFL Women’s comp. The club song is ‘The Pride of South Australia’ to the tune of the US Marines’ Hymn and their team colours are red, navy blue and gold. The Crows have a fierce rivalry with fellow South Australian team, Port Adelaide, with matches between the two referred to as ‘the showdown’. Their rivalry is considered the most bitter in the AFL, with Australian Football Hall of Fame Legend, Malcolm Blight, saying ‘there is no doubt it is the greatest rivalry in football.’ The club became the first in AFL history to have over 50,000 members in 2006. Since 2002, former world number one tennis player, Lleyton Hewitt has been the club’s number one ticket holder.
