A Short History Of The Cronulla Sharks

The Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks first entered the NRL in 1967, and have competed in every premiership season since. Their first season was not a great start, they finished last on the table, just behind fellow new addition to the league, the Penrith Panthers. Since then, they've appeared in 4 grand finals, winning their first premiership in 2016 against the Melbourne Storm. Cronulla debuted in 1967, in a teal jersey with a white 'V', which was adopted from the Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club. During the club's first season, their crest wasn't a shark; it was a drawing of Captain Cook's ship. Their club president suggested they be named the 'Lions', but it was captain Ken Kearney, who recommended the 'Sharks.' Given the seaside location 'Sharks' definitely made more sense.

Official Cronulla Sharks Merchandise Online

Throughout the 70s, 80s, and into the late 90s, the 'Sharks' logo featured a black circular crest with a blue shark. This did change after the Super League in 1997, to a blue and white logo in the shape of a star. Their club name was shortened to simply 'the Sharks', from 1999-2002, but then in 2003 it was changed back to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, and they changed the logo again in 2004, to the one you currently see on all their merchandise today.
