A Short History Of The Parramatta Eels

The first Parramatta club logo was introduced in the early 60s and was based on the official crest of the Parramatta City Council. It went through a few transformations over the years, before finally becoming the coiling eel in 1980. Despite the eel featuring heavily throughout the city of Parramatta, they weren't known as the Eels before that. In the early days, the only nickname Parramatta had was 'The Fruitpickers'. In the mid-60s, Sydney rugby league journalist, Peter Frilingos, suggested that the team should be known as the eels based on the indigenous meaning of the area as the 'place where the eels dwell.' This became the official nickname in the late 70s and coincided with the club's most successful period. From 1981 to 1986, they participated in 5 grand finals, winning four. They were also minor premiers for three years - 1977, 1982, and 1986.
