A Short History Of The Sydney Swans
Originally established as the South Melbourne Football Club in 1874, the club was a founding member of the comp in 1897. Moving to Sydney in 1982, the Sydney Swans were the first AFL club to be based outside of Victoria. After winning premierships in 1909, 1918 and 1933, the club went on to experience the longest premiership drought in AFL history – 72 years! They finally broke the drought, claiming the flag in 2005 and again in 2012. The Sydney Swans are known as one of the most consistent teams in the AFL, playing the most finals matches and winning the second most matches overall, behind Geelong. In 1985, the Swans were ‘bought’ by Geoffrey Edelsten, who provided millions of dollars in funding and other payments over five years. During this time, the Swans were seen as a flashy club and even introduced the ‘Swanettes’ who were the sole American style cheerleading squad in the comp. After their 2005 premiership win, the Swans flag was flown atop the Sydney Harbour Bridge for a week and the team were presented with the key to the city by Sydney Lord Mayor, Clover Moore.

In a nod to their heritage, the Sydney Swans added the initials ‘SMFC’ in white lettering to the back of their guernsey in 2004. Although a large majority of the South Melbourne Football Club fans were opposed to the relocation, the Swans have gone on to build a huge fan base in the city they now call home.
