A Short History Of The Fremantle Dockers

Founded in 1994, the Fremantle Football Club was the second team from Western Australia to be admitted to the AFL, following the West Coast Eagles in 1987. The Dockers nickname was coined to honour the wharfies of the port city of Fremantle. Many high-profile players have played for Fremantle since the club’s inception, including six time All-Australian Matthew Pavlich and dual Brownlow Medal winner Nat Fyfe. Unlike other AFL teams, the Dockers team song ‘Freo Way To Go’ is played to a contemporary rock tune. Opposition supporters hate the song, while Dockers fans are fiercely defensive of it. In 2021, Tame Impala frontman and Fremantle local, Kevin Parker, released a new ‘pump up’ track to be played at home games, drawing inspiration from AC/DC. Since 2003, the team’s mascot has been Johnny ‘The Doc’ Docker, a blonde-haired surfer.

Since the club’s inception, the colour purple has been synonymous with the team. In fact, one game each year is designated as the ‘Purple Haze’ game, in which the team wears an all-purple jumper and raises money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. The Dockers have recorded membership numbers above average for the AFL and their supporters are loud and proud.
