A Short History Of The Melbourne Demons

Nicknamed the Demons or Dees as they are affectionately known by loyal fans, the Melbourne Football Club’s origins can be traced back to 1858 when Tom Wills who was at the time captain of the Victoria cricket team called for the formation of a football club with a code of laws. Wills along with three other players created ‘The Rules of the Melbourne Football Club’ in 1859, which the AFL is based on. As a founding member of the VFA and VFL (now known as the AFL), Melbourne enjoyed dominant success early on and has won 12 premierships, the most recent being in 1964. Melbourne was also a foundation team of the AFL Women’s league. The Demons won flags in 1939, 1940 and 1941, becoming the third club after Carlton and Collingwood to win three consecutive premierships. In 1952, football legend Norm Smith became the club coach and in 1953 Ron Barassi began playing for the team. Together, the duo was the driving force behind the club’s most successful period, winning the flag in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959 and 1960.
