A Short History Of The Canberra Raiders
The Canberra Raiders were admitted to the league in the 1982 season. Their name was coined by the media because they were the first team based outside of Sydney (along with the Illawarra Steelers), since 1909, when Newcastle left the league. The Raiders featured in the 1987 grand final, and they won their first premiership in 1989. This game is still regarded as one of the greatest deciders in rugby history. The Raiders became the first team to win a premiership from outside the ladder’s top 3. They won 19 to 14 over the Balmain Tigers with extra time. Overall, The Raiders have won 3 premierships, been runner-up 3 times, and minor premiers once. And if you’ve ever wondered about the Canberra Raiders’ official mascot, his name is Victor the Viking.
Wear Your Raiders Merchandise With Pride
Since they first started in the league, the Raiders’ team colours have always been bright lime green and white, with blue and gold bands. The lime green was chosen as the main colour to differentiate the Raiders from other clubs, and the blue and gold were included because they were the traditional colours of the ACT. And it might surprise you to learn how the original jersey design came about. The club held a competition in 1981, and was won by Ms Patricia Taylor, who used the lime green, blue, gold and white to represent the ACT colours, as well as the first Rugby League team in the local area.
